Francesco Molinari has described his BMW PGA Championship win this past year as»enormous» because of his assurance and a vital element that led to his memorable Open triumph at Carnoustie.
Molinari produced an outstanding display of front-running to hold off playing-partner Rory McIlroy in Wentworth last May, and his success sparked a series of results which included his major title where he upstaged McIlroy and Tiger Woods.
The Italian recorded a record-breaking five wins from five in the Ryder Cup, however he has had a more silent 2019 and picked up his silverware at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March.
However he stays within the world’s top 10 and is currently looking forward to defending his BMW PGA name.
Reflecting on his triumph last May, Molinari said:»It was massive because I was in a similar spot to last year without having the ability to shut out the tournament. It just gave a great deal of confidence to me.
«I had been watching a video of the past couple of holes Sunday, and you might see I was uncomfortable in that position. I believe that was the very first step forward to becoming more comfortable in closing it out and directing a championship.
«I believe if you compare it with Carnoustie, it’s pretty simple to see the distinction. I am quite happy how it yeah if I get into that position again this season and went I’ll hit a third shot to 18!
«The win in the States (Quicken Loans National) obviously helped even more moving into The Open, that gave me more confidence then going in the Ryder Cup. May, June, July were especially those three months, although I am sure when I stop playing, I will reflect on this past year as an amazing year.
«Obviously I’ll work as hard as I can to get it done, however I know I’ve set a fairly high standard,» added Molinari, who appeared on course to collect another major title in the Masters in April, only to find water two over the back nine on Sunday since Woods stormed to his first major success in almost 11 decades.
«I had a excellent beginning of the year and after that, after the Experts, clearly I have not done too,» said Molinari, that hasn’t posted a top-10 end in his eight starts since his Augusta National disappointment.
«I believe there has been perhaps some scheduling problems. Golf that was adequate and I have played in the types. I’m happy the way I played at the US Open and The Open, however I’m happy the way I played with at the other tournaments.
«It’s hard to pinpoint one reason as to why. I’ve spoken to the folks around me and we’re trying to work out how best to move forward, and also to play golf.»
