Francesco Molinari reflects on ‘massive’ win at Wentworth

Francesco Molinari has clarified his BMW PGA Championship win this past year as»massive» due to his assurance and a vital element that resulted in his unforgettable Open victory at Carnoustie.
Molinari made an outstanding show of front-running to hold off playing-partner Rory McIlroy in Wentworth past May, and his success sparked a glorious series of results which included his maiden title where he upstaged Tiger Woods and McIlroy.
The Italian recorded a record-breaking five wins from five although he has had a more idiotic 2019 and picked up his only silverware at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
However he remains within the world’s best 10 and is currently looking forward to defending his BMW PGA name in the very first September playing of the tournament.
Reflecting on his victory May, Molinari said:»It was massive because I was in a comparable position to last year without having the ability to shut the tournament out. It simply gave me a lot of confidence.
«I had been watching a video of the last few holes on Sunday, and you may see I was uncomfortable in that place. I think that was the very first step to becoming more comfortable in directing a championship and closing it out.
«I think if you examine it with Carnoustie, it is pretty simple to see the distinction. I am quite happy how if I get in that position again this season it moved and yeah I’ll hit a shot that is third that is much superior !
«The win in the States (Quicken Loans National) clearly helped even more going into The Open, that gave me even more confidence then going into the Ryder Cup. I am sure when I stop playing, I will reflect on this past year but especially those 3 monthsMay, June, July have been.
«Obviously I will work as hard as I will get it done, however I know I have set a fairly high standard,» added Molinari, that seemed on track to amass another big title in the Masters in April, only to find water two on the back nine on Sunday as Woods stormed into his first key success in almost 11 decades.
«I had a great beginning of the season and then, after the Masters, clearly I haven’t done as well,» said Molinari, that has not posted a top-10 ending in his eight starts since his Augusta National disappointment.
«I think there’s been some scheduling problems. I have played golf that was adequate in the other majors, aside from this PGA. I’m very happy the way I played with at The Open and the US Open, however I’m not happy how I played with at another tournaments.
«It’s difficult to pinpoint one reason as to this. I’ve talked to the folks around me and we are trying to figure out the best way to move forward, and to play better golf.»
